Ne varsin valehtelevat,
Tuiki tyhjeä panevat,
Jotka soittoa sanovat,
Arvelevat kanteletta
Väinämöisen veistämäksi,
Jumalan kuvoamaksi,
Hauin suuren hartioista,
Veen koiran koukkuluista;

Soitto on suruista tehty,
Murehista muovaeltu:
Koppa päivistä kovista,
Emäpuu ikipoloista,
Kielet kiusoista kerätty,
Naulat muista vastuksista.

Sentä ei soita kanteleni,
Ei iloitse ensinkänä,
Soitto ei soita suosioksi,
Laske ei laatuista iloa,
Kun on huolista kuvattu,
Murehista muovaeltu.

I should be writing larp characters for next week's banana republic extravaganza; so I do what's the most natural to me. I procrastinate by writing a short story.

Subject: Oh, all the young men
Security: Public

I'm so very tired of computer games still persisting on pleasing adolescent-minded men, and as such I'm eager to play games that are a little different. I do it with some faint gleaming bud of hope, gleaming through the dark night of halos and gears of metal or war or whatever. I try tiny flash games, I download Interactive Fiction, I install indie game demos, I try find something that I could really enjoy. (What I would REALLY like is an Oblivion-Fallout3-engine remake of Daggerfall but fat chance with that!)

What really gets to me about it all is, it's like I'm not even treated as anyone's target audience in any game. I feel like the games don't address me or my interests in any relevant way. I'm so jaded with game graphics depiction of plastic females I don't even notice it anymore. When I play Oblivion or World of Warcraft, I am constantly in the process of telling myself my own stories in the game worlds, and not out of the sheer pleasure of it, but because I feel I have to, to make the games playable for myself, and these are about the only games I'm currently on that even have enough open-ness for internal-dialogue storytelling/roleplaying.

This morning, what I feel it all boils down to, is the snobbish vocal nerdery of the players, and the people between being players and being involved in the industry. There is an unrelenting atmosphere in the gaming culture of putting down every other art form, which I feel has something to do with the rebellious, young aspect of mainstream gaming, who would be put off by artsy-fartsy ideas of deep characters and character development, or game graphics taking influence from something else than realistic blood and bouncing boobs.

Hey, cool game graphics are just as much art as any Monet, and storytelling? Heck, anyone can write a story.

Subject: Tinker Bell

I watched Tinker Bell last night. Ok, to be completely honest at some point I became totally enraptured by some people rushing to the Internet Barricades on interactive drama somewhere else and I missed some totally relevant shizzle in fairy world.

My impression on Tinker Bell was that it was an educative film on how it's best for a young mind to conform to the expectations of the society, because what blinking magic lights and the voice of Anjelica Huston tell you about you is more important than how you feel about yourself, or what you want to do with the entire rest of your life. Only by conforming you get the chance to change the system from the inside to get what you want.

I found the film totally offensive to the spunky and energetic character of Tinker Bell, although I haven't seen or read the play. But even Julia Roberts' portrayal in Hook beats what Disney's done to the poor fairy.

I guess in this day and age, I shouldn't be shocked that Tinker Bell gets toned down to a goofy-yet-kind-hearted, good-intending and nice little teen. It irks me in two ways: One is injustice of the breaking of a character, the second is the obvious implication that mischief and hot temper are not qualities fit for promotion to the film's intended audience.

Addendum: I suppose it would be good to say something about it visually. I thought it had too much shine and bling. I wanted to turn my eyes away early in the beginning especially, because there's such a thing as too much gold dust.

I made carrot cake. It's awesome.

Last week I made cheese cake. That was great too.

My cake-making frenzy was brought on to me after I got tired of knitting socks, and I felt I needed something to do that would be as therapeutic as knitting is.

Delicious as cake may be, I'm afraid it comes with the hazard of possible overdose on grease and sugar.

Right now, I don't mind much, because right now, the creation and devouring of cake has given me a singular peace of mind.

I think Lacey is going to get a scarf.

20 230 words down.

Roughly 60 000 to go.

Last night, when I was writing, I began to have flashbacks of Les rivières pourpres. I hope that the dark, inbred mood from those alps won't sneakily translate between the lines into Crows and Ravens.

In other news, new Qntal album sounds dreamy. Must have >.>

I was visiting [info]saderakki yesterday. We had a walk, made tuna salad, pondered upon facial expressions, and how water is made, amongst other things. Before we started watching Deathproof and Planet Terror, I felt I had to defend my amour for the fantasy genre to her.
